Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the bacterium that causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. Typical symptoms include pain during urination or unusual discharge, but often the infection occurs without any symptoms.

If untreated, it can cause inflammation of the reproductive organs and complications such as infertility. Modern PCR tests detect the pathogen's DNA quickly and reliably.
